How to use experts – and when not to
I was thinking about the nature of experts when I came across this video on TED from Noreena Hertz and thought it was worth viewing – there’s something attractive about “democratizing expertise”.
I believe that the essence of Noreena’s message is self-evident; using experts doesn’t relieve us of the responsibility to engage and ask questions. Where she advocates “dissent”, I hear diversity and inclusion of opinion. In organisations we label individuals as “experts” and give them authority to make decisions; to do so without checks and balances is simply naive. What do you think?
